Hannah Doody, Director of Community and Housing

A message from Hannah Doody Director of Community and Housing

Dear Applicant

Thank you for your expression of interest in our post of Assistant Director, Adult Social Care at the London Borough of Merton. These are exciting times at Merton; I have been recently appointed to the Role of Director of Community and Housing taking up the post in early July. Merton’s vision is to be London’s best Council. Innovation and ambition underpin our success in delivering high quality services to date

We are proud of our desire to do things differently, think creatively and deliver services with a fresh approach. Working closely with key partners including Health and the CCG will be critical to meeting financial challenges. Whoever we select will play a vital and influential role in shaping Adult Social Care in Merton.  You will be an exceptional leader – providing strategic and operational leadership to the commissioning and delivery of Adult Social Care.  In our Directorate of Community and Housing service:

  • We have undergone major service transformation towards the service personalisation agenda and cementing strong partnerships to deliver adult social care services
  • We are well above average in how many of our customers use Direct Payments
  • We have enabled a high proportion of our customers to be supported at home and have held down our care home usage
  • Over the years our performance on delayed transfers of care has been among the best, and is still better than average
  • We have won national recognition for innovative schemes such as our shared hoarding policy and our use of pre-paid cards
  • We pioneered new approaches to prevention, working with the voluntary sector as part of the Ageing Well programme.

Our Libraries and Heritage service is well established and the library service of the future will look different from the one we have today. There are key challenges around continuing to deliver efficiencies, improving customer satisfaction and enabling new technologies and there are key projects to deliver these outcomes.

In September 2016, Merton Adult Education became a commissioned service, commissioning adult education from subcontracted providers. This will allow for an improved and flexible course offer from specialist organisations, whilst retaining adult education within the control of Merton council.

The Public Health develops and implements strategies, which promote prevention and challenge health inequalities. This is achieved through developing strong relationships with council colleagues, Health, Merton CCG, the voluntary sector and local organisations.

The Housing Needs and Enabling Service delivers our statutory housing functions to prevent homelessness and avoid the use of temporary accommodation. Services are planned in response to changes in national policies and in the housing market, and to develop innovative projects or models of delivery that maximise the use of resources and deliver services that minimise costs to the council.

We, as a team, are all committed to achieving our objectives.  We are seeking individuals who have proven track record of achieving and managing cultural and organisational change and of leading improvement across adult social care services.

You will be part of a well-established and settled senior Management Team that is focused, collaborative and entrepreneurial, and works on strong relationships with Partners and Members to continue to move Merton forward.

If you feel that you would be able to meet the challenges of working in this dynamic context, and have the skills to support our vision, I hope that this pack contains enough to persuade you to apply to a winning team.
